Posture

Posture Our posture is something that most people are aware of - it’s often associated with our parents constantly telling us to “sit up straight” as kids. While most people are focused on the aesthetics of having good posture there is a whole array of other health benefits too.

Our bodies are designed to have neutral head, shoulders and hips however, with increasing use of computers and devices we are seeing more and more that people are having rounded shoulders and forward head postures.

So what does this mean for us?

- As our head shifts forward it changes the stress and load on our spine and makes our head actually feel heavier. This means that our neck and shoulder muscles are having to work a lot harder to support our head.

- Rounded shoulder places further stress on these areas as well as closing down our chest and pulling us further forward.

These changes in our structural system mean our body is forced to work a lot harder to keep us upright and often can result in changes in muscle balance, movement, tension headaches and breathing.

So how can we help?

People often say that they try to sit up straight or roll their shoulders back but inevitably end up slouching again. This is often because our body has gotten used to this pattern of holding itself and keeps falling back into “default”. By assisting your spine and nervous system to function at its best we can help bring things back into balance and work on retraining a better pattern for our bodies.
